Are you pregnant and not exercising?

Did you know that there are exercise recommendations for all women when pregnant. These recommendations will change based on you trimester, pre-natal exercise levels, and any other conditions that need to be taken into consideration.

The Australian Catholic University has found:
- Over half of pregnant women in their 1st and 2nd trimesters are not meeting physical activity guidelines
- Over 2/3 of women in their 3rd trimester are not meeting physical activity guidelines

Exercise doesn't have to be in a gym or completing a sequence of exercises at home.

Our Exercise Physiologists are experts in finding what works for you and what interest you. If you aren't invested in what you're doing, it wont be sustainable.

The Stepping On program incorporates a group setti

The Stepping On program incorporates a group setting plus individualized follow-up. It covers a range of issues, including falls and risk, strength and balance exercises, home hazards, safe footwear, vision and falls, safety in public places, community mobility, coping after a fall, and understanding how to initiate a medication review.

If you or someone you know would benefit from the Stepping On program, please contact our clinic as we will be running the next program in May 2021, in Laurieton on a Thursday.

Introducing our newest team member, Christy!

Christy has recently finished her master's degree in Exercise Physiology. Having completed her placements throughout the Mid North Coast area and having living in Port Macquarie for 7 years, Christy is keen to give back to her community!

Christy has a keen interest in falls prevention and working with older clients to help them age gracefully and maintain their independence. She is also passionate about the promotion of exercise for mental health and aspires to work closely with local GP's to offer services for those who need. Outside of work, Christy has been training for 7yrs in crossfit with a particular interest in weightlifting. She enjoys talking with clients about their pets and adventures and loves dad jokes and bad puns.

Let's talk about pelvic floor.

It potentially isn't something you think about or talk about very often but the health of your pelvic floor can make a big difference to the quality of your life.

How do you know if your pelvic floor is happy? The following are possible signs and symptoms of an unhappy pelvic floor:

- Leaking urine when you laugh, cough, bend over, jump or run
- Rushing to the toilet or not making it there in time
- Always needing to go to the toilet
- Having difficulties emptying your bladder or bowel
- Losing control of your bladder and bowel
- Prolapse symptoms like a bulge in the vagina or a feeling of heaviness, discomfort, pulling, dragging or dropping
- Pain in your pelvic area
- Painful sex

If you are concerned about any of these signs, come in and speak to Kirsty or Jess.

Last week, Ali attend a residential school for her "ALERT" course at Macquarie Uni. Ali learnt manual lymphatic drainage and bandaging techniques to enable her to treat those with lymphoedema secondary to breast cancer. Bella is studying a Bachelor of Secondary Education (majoring in PDHPE) and Abbie is completing a Bachelor of Science (majoring in Psychology) with the goal of studying Occupational Therapy next year. Keep up the studies girls, and try to stay out of trouble 😝

Meet our superstar of the month, Max!

Max will be representing his school today at the state swimming carnival held at Sydney Olympic Park.
Max will be swimming in the 50m and 100m freestyle and 50m backstroke.

Max also loves to play football for the Camden Haven Eagles! If you see him out of the field, make sure you cheer him on!

“The local Army Reserve unit, 41 Royal NSW Regiment has been assisting state emergency services organisations with the flood relief and recovery response.

I have been the commander on the ground for the Port Mac Hastings LGA, working at the Emergency Operations Centre coordinating troops to task.

We have loved being able to roll up our sleeves to join the "mud army" helping our local community restore their properties and clean roads and water ways.”

It was a sad day last Thursday when Mitch had his final day, after 7 years with SSPC 😢

Mitch had headed back to what he calls “God’s Country” (silly Queenslander!! 😂) to start his next chapter at Queensland Sports Medicine Centre. This is an amazing opportunity for a wonderful EP, but he will be very missed at SSPC by staff and patients the same.

Sports and Spinal Wauchope is excited to announce

Sports and Spinal Wauchope is excited to announce that March will be the first course for Stepping ON 2021.

Stepping ON is a free, 7-week program for people 65 years or older, living in the community and have a concern/fear about falls. Once a week for 7 weeks you can join other like-minded individuals and enjoy direct access to experts in their field such as pharmacy, physiotherapy, podiatry as well participate in group exercise directly targeted at reducing a person's risk of falls.

Arthur reports that exercise physiology has "changed my life"!

Arthur first came to Jess in September 2020 with a shoulder injury. He has worked hard to recover and has not only achieved strength and function in his shoulder, but has lost 45kgs and is loving his new gym programs!

Arthur thought he would never squat with a barbell again due to his shoulders and reports that it has been 20 years since squatting. Last week he completed a 30kg front squat, and is up to 100kg deadlifts. What an amazing effort, congrats Arthur!!

What is Blood Flow Restriction Training? BFR is a

What is Blood Flow Restriction Training?

BFR is an exercise training technique, where a medical grade cuff is placed around a limb during exercise. This cuff allows arterial blood flow (oxygenated) to that region whilst limiting venous blood return (deoxygenated blood).

What are the benefits?

This type of training increases muscular mass, strength and endurance without the need to exercise at higher intensities.

Who would this benefit?

In the clinical rehabilitation world, blood flow restriction training is used to speed up the rehabilitation process from common upper/ lower limb injuries. It is also very beneficial for people post operatively when they are in the early phases of their rehabilitation as it is not appropriate to load the area at higher intensities.

If you would like some more information regarding this treatment technique or are struggling with your rehabilitation please contact us and find out if this type of training is suitable for you! Please note, we do not recommend this therapy for everyone, and we do not recommend you try it without professional assessment and advice.
